Last week marked a significant milestone for the GameOn Project, a collaborative initiative between UiA – Faculty of Engineering and Science and Varodd AS. This project is passionately committed to empowering individuals who have encountered various life challenges—ranging from health issues to unfortunate setbacks. By harnessing the transformative power of digital skills acquired through gaming, the GameOn Project aims to facilitate the reintegration of these individuals into the professional world.
Over the course of two enlightening days, our new group of participants plunged into the competitive yet collaborative world of League of Legends. As they formed teams and navigated through intense gaming sessions, they embarked on profound journeys of self-discovery and mutual understanding. Utilizing the Metaframe tool from Metagame, each participant had the opportunity to evaluate their personal strengths and areas for growth, providing us with invaluable insights into their capabilities and untapped potential.
The project’s initial setup phase was a testament to the resilience and cooperative spirit of our participants. Spontaneous acts of leadership emerged as some individuals stepped up to assist their peers, laying the foundation for what would become a powerful display of teamwork and camaraderie. We witnessed a significant evolution in team dynamics and communication styles as the gaming sessions progressed. This transformation was especially evident during the post-match analyses, where participants uplifted one another, creating an atmosphere of collective support and encouragement.
This experience highlighted the emergence of natural leadership within the five teams. Each leader showcased their unique approach to managing and motivating their team, contributing to various leadership styles and strategies. This variety enriched the experience and highlighted the vast potential lying dormant within our group.
The GameOn Project underscores the unique power of gaming as a safe, engaging platform for personal expression and growth. In this environment, participants can be themselves, maximize their contributions, and leverage enhanced team dynamics for personal and professional development.
Through initiatives like the GameOn Project, we are reminded of the unconventional yet effective pathways gaming can create for learning and growth.
